Janel Bazih
Reporting directly to the President and COO, Bazih has played a pivotal role in guiding Spencer’s evolution from a traditional savings bank with 12 branches and $1.2 billion in assets to a full-service commercial bank with 27 Financial Centers and over $4 billion in assets. Under her leadership, the bank has advanced its digital capabilities and embraced a data-informed marketing model, enabling more personalized engagement and providing deeper insights into customer behaviors—fueling smarter, results-driven decisions.
Purpose at the Core: How Community Shapes Our Brand
“Marketing today is more than just promotion—it’s about delivering value at every touchpoint and building meaningful relationships that last,” Bazih says. “We focus on clear, consistent messaging that reflects the bank’s mission, while adapting to the evolving needs of our customers.”
“We Deliver Integrated Campaigns That Enhance The Bank’s Market Presence, Support Business Development, And Communicate Our Mission And Values With Clarity And Consistency”
Spencer Savings Bank, a legacy institution in New Jersey for over 130 years, is deeply committed to community involvement. The bank doesn’t just sponsor community events—it shows up with a strong presence and a team of bankers ready to engage. “We’re not just in the community—we’re part of it,” she says.
Janel’s dedication extends well beyond the bank’s walls. She herself is an active community leader, currently serving as Chair of the Marketing and Fundraising Committee at the Garfield YMCA. She also holds or has held leadership and advisory roles with several nonprofits and business organizations, including Eva’s Village, the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless, New Jersey Battle of the Badges, the Freddie Porter Memorial Scholarship Fund, Garfield Boys & Girls Club Golf Committee, Companion Animal Advocates and the Statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Through her leadership in marketing and her passion for service, Janel Bazih exemplifies how purpose-driven marketing can elevate both business and community impact.
Data-Driven Marketing That Connects
At Spencer, customer insights are at the heart of our marketing strategy. We leverage first-party data, behavioral trends, and market research to better understand our customers’ needs, preferences, and financial goals. These insights inform everything—from campaign messaging and creative design to channel selection and timing.
Our audience segmentation goes beyond demographics, incorporating factors like life stage, product usage, relationship duration, propensity to purchase and engagement levels, which allows us to deliver more targeted and effective messaging.
Personalization is embedded throughout our marketing efforts, from tailored onboarding journeys and email communications to personalized QR codes and data-driven digital advertising. Every touchpoint is designed to create relevant, meaningful interactions that strengthen relationships and drive results.
Optimizing Tools Today, Preparing for Tomorrow
Currently, we utilize multiple systems to make data-informed marketing decisions, refine segmentation, and identify at-risk customers. This enables proactive retention efforts that increase customer satisfaction and build loyalty.
Marketing automation also plays a key role—particularly with onboarding and email marketing—streamlining workflows and ensuring consistent, multi-channel campaigns.
Looking ahead, Bazih sees artificial intelligence as a critical next step in advancing marketing strategies. “AI offers enormous potential for improving the customer experience, but there is a natural caution when it comes to security and fraud prevention. As the technology evolves, effective integration will be essential”.
Advice for the Next Generation of Marketers
“I believe marketing is one of the most dynamic, rewarding and in-demand fields out there”, Bazih says. Her advice to young professionals in the industry is to stay curious and never stop learning.
With roles spanning creative design, copywriting, PR, digital strategy, social media, analytics, events, and community engagement, marketing offers endless opportunities to find your niche. “Whether you’re data-driven, a natural storyteller, or passionate about community—there’s a place for you,” she says.
Bazih also encourages aspiring marketers to embrace the field’s evolving nature. “Marketing touches every industry. It offers both career stability and room to grow. Keep your skills sharp, stay open to new challenges, and you’ll build a career that’s not only successful, but fulfilling.”
