Can you walk us through a typical workday and the tasks you focus on?
My typical day unfolds in three distinct parts. To start, I dedicate 15 minutes to scroll through market trends and take a look at what our competitors are doing. This move is important to ensure our strategies align with current market dynamics.
Following that, I start checking emails to follow up on marketing updates from individual markets based on project needs. As a regional brand lead, I prioritize weekly catch-ups with my team to foster effective communication and advance our marketing initiatives.
Lastly, I allocate time to focus on impactful regional projects, such as collaborations, quarterly market updates, and strategic planning with our US headquarters. While routine tasks are important, it’s essential to carve out time for planning what’s new and next to drive the brand forward.
Could you talk about the industry and outline its current challenges and pain points?
Shake Shack’s origins in fine dining have shaped our identity as a “fine casual” brand with a mission to “Stand for Something Good.” We strive to bring the best of Shake Shack’s unique fine- casual experience and hospitality to communities worldwide. From our premium ingredients to innovative menu offerings and brand collaborations, we distinguish ourselves from traditional quick-service restaurants.
“Understanding our audience is the key to elevate brand presence and drive growth”
Over the years, one challenge we have faced is that many guests are unaware of what makes the Shake Shack menu unique and why our prices differ from those of other QSR brands. Recent market research revealed that 51% of guests and potential diners prioritize ingredient quality when selecting a fine-casual restaurant. This insight prompted us to return to our roots and educate our guests about our premium core ingredients. In response, the US launched the “Worth It” campaign, aimed at making Shake Shack’s commitment to quality and culinary craftsmanship a topic of conversation— both figuratively and literally.
As we expand internationally, balancing localization with our core brand values is essential for connecting with local audiences. We have introduced different protein options tailored to local market trends as limited-time offerings, such as the Fish Burger in Hong Kong and the Porker Burger in Thailand. The performance of these items has exceeded our expectations, and local guests truly appreciate the menu innovation and our dedication to premium ingredients, which set us apart from competitors.
Since your team was small when you joined, could you share a specific initiative you spearheaded at Shake Shack?
Given our fine dining roots, one of our unique strengths is our commitment to culinary innovation using premium ingredients. We take great pride in collaborating with renowned chefs to create menus that are accessible to a broad audience while maintaining the highest quality.
In each market, we typically engage in chef collaborations every 1-2 years to revitalize our offerings and increase brand awareness. Recently, we partnered with two Michelin-starred restaurant La Cime in Japan, one Michelin-starred restaurant Potong in Thailand, and the #2 establishment on the World’s 50 Best Bars list, Bar Leone. These collaborations not only bring culinary excitement to our markets but also help us connect deeply with local communities, further strengthening our brand values.
These collaborations have generated significant PR value, increased foot traffic to our locations, and fostered long-term brand loyalty.
Are there any emerging technologies you think could transform the market? Is there something new you are particularly excited about and would like to share?
As Shake Shack expands, understanding our guests' profiles and their in-store experiences becomes essential. These valuable insights inform our marketing strategies, enhance operational efficiency, and drive menu innovation. To achieve this, Shake Shack has implemented various customer experience and brand research tools from the experience management company Qualtrics, allowing us to collect real-time feedback and assess our brand performance against competitors.
By analyzing key performance metrics from guest surveys, we gain a comprehensive understanding of guest sentiments toward Shake Shack. This analysis enables us to evaluate how well we meet their expectations and understand its impact on their behavior and likelihood of recommending Shake Shack as their preferred dining choice.
What advice would you give to your peers or budding entrepreneurs entering your industry, especially regarding marketing and branding? Is there any key insight or lesson you think is essential for them to keep in mind?
As a marketer, I advise staying open-minded and connecting with expertise beyond your industry. For example, if you are in food and beverage, do not limit your exposure to your own industry, but delve into trends and insights from diverse fields such as retail, music, and sports. Ultimately, the key is to embrace a broader perspective. By stepping outside your industry, you can discover fresh insights, inspire creativity, and position your brand in ways that might not be possible within traditional confines. This approach not only enhances your marketing efforts but also fosters lasting relationships that drive growth.
